When a tooth in your smile suffers from discolored enamel or a physical imperfection, such as a mismatched dental filling or small dental fracture, it can leave you feeling self-conscious. Some physical imperfections can be masked with dental veneers. However, a more significant imperfection might need to be treated with a porcelain dental crown.

Dr. Stephen Henry will start by removing the entire tooth enamel layer with a drill. Then he will make an impression of the abutment and any corresponding teeth in your bite pattern.

The impression will then be sent to a dental lab where the porcelain crown will be custom made. A hard, plastic cap, known as a temporary crown, will be cemented over the abutment to protect it. It’s important to note that the temporary crown is not a functional tooth. It will need some basic care, and you should try to avoid biting and chewing with it.

You will need to return for a follow-up appointment when your porcelain crown is ready. The temporary crown will be removed and the new crown will be cemented directly onto the abutment.
